Uganda has made significant strides in promoting women's empowerment and utilizing technology to drive socioeconomic development. The government has implemented provisions to protect women's rights and advance gender equality, guided by international frameworks like the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol). However, there are still obstacles to overcome, and further steps are needed to achieve full gender parity.
The proportion of women in parliament has seen progress, with 34.9% of seats held by women as of February 2021. This rise in female representation is a step in the right direction towards attaining gender equality and making sure that women's opinions are taken into consideration when making decisions. However, gender-based violence remains a major problem in Uganda, with 26.1% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 reporting being physically or sexually abused by a current or former intimate partner. To combat violence against women and offer victims the appropriate protection and support, efforts are being undertaken to develop legislative frameworks and support networks..
Accurate and trustworthy statistics are necessary to address gender-related concerns efficiently, but there are large data gaps in Uganda in important areas such as gender and the environment, physical and sexual harassment, women's access to assets, and gender and poverty. To create evidence-based policies and track Uganda's commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is imperative to close these data gaps.
Economic empowerment is another of the main tenets of women's empowerment in Uganda. Women can increase their economic independence and contribute to the general growth of the nation by being given the tools, chances, and skills they need. In Uganda, several measures have been put into place to support women's economic emancipation.

Organizations like Uganda Women's Trust (UWT) have focused on building the skills of women in agriculture, ensuring family food security, and boosting revenue production. Women farmers have been able to improve their agricultural methods and increase their means of subsistence through training, resource access, and market connections.
Technological advancements, particularly in the field of digital technology, have also opened new avenues for women's empowerment in Uganda. The increased availability of mobile phones and internet connectivity has facilitated access to information, markets, and financial services, enabling women to start businesses, access educational resources, and connect with potential customers.
However, there are still challenges to be addressed to ensure sustained women's empowerment in Uganda. These include gender-specific barriers that hinder economic empowerment, limited access to finance, segregation into lower-value sectors, and cultural biases that impede career progression. By addressing these challenges, promoting economic empowerment, and harnessing the power of technology, Uganda is working towards achieving true gender equality.
